Dan Gentile Dog Training Center

2-Week Dog Board & Train Program

Dog Board & Train NJ: The Best "Train While Away" Program in Monmouth County

You love your dog. There is no doubt about that. But let's be honest for a second. Some of their behaviors are making everyday life harder than it needs to be.

Maybe they pull so hard on the leash that your shoulder hurts by the end of the block. Maybe they jump on guests the second someone walks through the front door, leaving you apologizing for muddy paws or torn clothes. Or maybe you are still dealing with accidents in the house, even though you thought you were past that stage months ago.

Real behavior change doesn't happen once a week in a distracted aisle full of treats. It happens every single day, through structure, repetition, and clear communication.

That is why Dan Gentile Dog Training Center offers an immersive 2-week Board and Train program right here in Monmouth County. Your dog comes to stay with us and trains every day on our private 12-acre campus in Howell Township. This isn't a kennel stay. This isn't daycare. It is a structured, hands-on training experience designed to reset bad habits and build calm, reliable obedience from the ground up. We don’t just watch your dog. We teach them how to listen, how to focus, and how to behave so they can finally be the companion you have always wanted them to be.

Quick Question: Is Board and Train Right for You?

What is it? Think of it like a summer camp for better behavior. Your dog lives with us for 2 weeks and receives professional training and guidance 24/7.

Who is it for? This is for the busy owner who wants results. It is for dogs who need basic obedience, puppies who need a solid foundation, or dogs struggling with anxiety and reactivity (barking and lunging).

The Result: A dog that walks politely on a loose leash. A dog that comes running when you call them. A dog that knows how to settle down in the house.

The Guarantee: We don't just train the dog and wish you luck. We offer free lifetime support. If you need help next month or five years from now, we are here for you.

The Problem with "DIY" Dog Training

Most dog owners in Monmouth County start with the best intentions. You go to the park in Freehold or Manalapan after watching your favorite TikTok dog trainer to practice. During that hour, your dog might sit — they might even stay.

But the second you leave and a squirrel runs across the driveway, all that training goes out the window. Dogs are masters of context. They learn that "Sit" means "Sit when we are in the classroom and you are holding a piece of cheese." They haven't learned that "Sit" means "Sit everywhere, every time, no matter what is happening around us."

To get that level of reliability, you need hundreds of successful repetitions in different environments. For a busy family, finding the time to do that is almost impossible. You have work. You have kids. You have a life.

This is where our Board and Train program changes the game. By having your dog stay with us, we take the burden off your shoulders. We put in the repetitions for you. We establish the foundation. We teach them the rules — then, once the hard work is done, we hand the leash over to you.

Our Monmouth County Dog Board and Train Services

We target the real-world skills that actually make your life easier. We aren't interested in teaching your dog circus tricks. We want to teach them how to be a good family member. Here is exactly what we work on while your dog is with us.

1. Dog Obedience Training (The Foundation)

A well-trained dog is a happy dog because they know what is expected of them. Our foundational obedience program teaches your dog to look to you for guidance rather than making their own bad decisions. We focus on the "Big Three" commands that keep your home peaceful:

  • The "Place" Command: Your dog goes to their bed and stays there calmly until you release them — an "off switch" for high-energy dogs.
  • The "Sit" and "Down" Stay: We teach your dog that "Stay" means "relax right here until I need you," even if there are people walking by.

2. On/Off-Leash Obedience Training

On-Leash: The days of your arm being pulled out of its socket are over. We stop the pulling, stop the lunging, and teach your dog to walk politely at your side in the "Heel" position.

Off-Leash: We build a reliable recall — the "Come" command. We want you to trust that if you call your dog in a safe, open space, they will spin around and run back to you immediately.

3. Bad Behavior Modification

We specialize in fixing the frustrating behaviors that other trainers often struggle with — counter-surfing, jumping on guests, excessive barking, and reactivity. We give them a job to do instead and build their confidence so they don't feel the need to put on a show every time they see a distraction.

Important Safety Note: For the safety of our staff and the other dogs in our care, we do not accept dogs with a history of human aggression or biting.

4. Housebreaking and Structure

When your dog stays with us, they are on a strict schedule. They learn to hold it and wait for the appropriate time and place. We establish a biological rhythm and routine that you can easily maintain once your dog returns home.

Why We Are Worth the Drive

We have clients who drive to us from all over Monmouth County — from New York and Pennsylvania. Why do people drive past a dozen other trainers to bring their dog to Howell?

1. The 12-Acre Advantage

Most board and train facilities in New Jersey are located in industrial parks or strip malls — small, indoor storefronts with rubber mats or concrete floors. That isn't the real world. At Dan Gentile Dog Training Center, your dog trains on 12 acres of private land. They run on grass. They train on nature trails. They smell fresh air. This physical freedom lowers their stress levels, and a happy, exercised dog learns fast.

2. 40+ Years of Experience

Dan Gentile has been training dogs professionally for over four decades. We have seen every breed. We have seen every behavior. We have fixed every problem. In an industry where anyone can call themselves a "trainer" after watching a few videos, experience matters.

3. Safety and Transparency

  • 24/7 Surveillance: Cameras monitoring the entire facility, checked remotely around the clock to ensure every dog is safe and settled.
  • Secure Fencing: Our exercise areas are fully contained. Your dog gets the freedom to run without the risk.
  • Climate Control: Advanced dual-sanitization HVAC systems keep the air clean, scrub out allergens, and prevent the spread of airborne issues.

The "Secret Sauce": Training the Owner

Will the training stick? The answer is yes. But only if you change too. Dogs are smart. If your dog comes home and senses that nothing has changed, they may naturally fall back into old habits.

The Turnover Session: When you come to pick up your dog, we don't just hand you the leash and wave goodbye. We spend time with you. We teach you. We show you exactly how to give the commands, how to hold the leash, how to correct them when they make a mistake, and how to praise them when they get it right.

Leadership Transfer: We transfer the leadership from us to you. And it doesn't end there.

Lifetime Support: If you get home and forget how to do something, you call us. If six months from now your dog tries to test the boundaries, you call us. We are your partners for the life of your dog.

Board and Train vs. Standard Dog Classes

We know that sending your dog away for two weeks is a major decision. Many owners wonder if they should just try a standard weekly class instead. But you have to think about the true cost of living with an untrained dog — the destroyed furniture, the vet bills, the daily stress of avoiding neighborhood walks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my dog remember me?

Yes! This is the number one fear owners have, but it is a myth. Dogs have incredible memories. They do not forget their families in two weeks. In fact, they will be thrilled to see you. And the best part? They will respect you more because you will now be communicating with them in a way they understand.

How do I maintain the training at home?

Consistency is key. When you pick up your dog, we give you a set of instructions. If you stick to the routine we give you, the training lasts forever. If you let them get away with murder the first week they are back, they will revert. But don't worry we are here to guide you through that transition.

Can I visit my dog during the two weeks?

We recommend against it. It sounds harsh, but it is for the dog's benefit. The program works because the dog is fully immersed in a new routine. If you visit, it breaks their focus. It can cause confusion and flare up separation anxiety. We want them focused 100% on learning so they can come home to you better than ever.

Do you take aggressive dogs?

We handle reactivity, which is barking or lunging due to excitement or fear. We are very good at that. However, for the safety of our staff and the other dogs in our care, we don’t train aggressive dogs. Safety is our top priority.

How far is the facility from my town?

We are in Howell Township, NJ. We are centrally located for all of Monmouth County.

  • Freehold / Manalapan: A quick 10-15 minute drive.
  • Red Bank / Middletown: About 20-30 minutes.
  • New York / Philadelphia: About 60 minutes. Trust us, the short drive is worth the long-term peace of mind.
