The Critical Window Every Puppy Owner Needs to Know About.
Published by Professional Dog Trainer Dan Gentile | Dog Training
From six to fourteen weeks of age is a critical period in a puppy’s life. It is time to socialize your pup.
This is the window when your puppy is most open to new experiences. What they are exposed to — and how they react to it — during this period shapes their behavior for the rest of their life. Proper socialization during these weeks is one of the most important things you can do as a puppy owner.
Socialization is the process of introducing your puppy to the world — new people, environments, objects, sounds, and experiences. The goal is to build confidence so your puppy grows into a calm, well-adjusted adult dog.
The Critical Window
The socialization window closes around 14 weeks of age. After this point, puppies become naturally more cautious of new things. Exposing your puppy to diverse experiences before this window closes is one of the most impactful things you can do to prevent behavioral problems down the road.
